Writer: Brian Wood
Artist: Ming Doyle
Image Comics | comic | $2.99

I would have checked this out just based on the premise (see below), but with Brian Wood writing, it makes the decision even easier. Almost everything Wood writes is gold, especially the ongoing, The Massive and Demo and Local. Wood writes character first, and he can take a simple premise (celebrity sports figure gets super powers) and put the most interesting spin on it. Demo was about teens and young adults who struggle with new-found super abilities. That could be a description of an X-Men book, but Demo was very different because each story was about the individual–not about the power.

There’s only a few titles this week, so give this a shot!

IMAGE says: “Acclaimed creator BRIAN WOOD (The Massive, DMZ, Demo, Northlanders) and brilliant newcomer MING DOYLE (The Loneliest Astronaut, Fantastic Four, Girl Comics) bring you MARA, the story of an especially gifted woman in a sports-and war-obsessed future. Young Mara Prince is at the top of the world, a global celebrity in a culture that prizes physical achievement above all else. After she manifests supernatural abilities on live TV, she becomes famous all over again but for the worst reasons. Integrating themes of superpowers, celebrity worship, corporate power, feminism, and political brinksmanship, MARA takes a classic genre to new places.”
