Good Flea Market, Let’s Go Eat! or… Let’s Do It Again!

Our first foray into having a Memorial Day Flea Market & Collectibles Show was a success! I have to admit that I was a little concerned about it – would we be able to fill the spots? (yes, we did), would the weather be cooperative? (yes, it did), and would we get a decent crowd out on the last day of a holiday – again, yes, we did! So… of course we’re doing what become an annual event at Captain Blue Hen Comics – our 4th of July Flea Market & Collectibles Show!

We are truly excited about this one since July 4th happens to fall on a Wednesday this year. Wednesday, as in New Comics Day Wednesday! Without even advertising, which we will do anyway, naturally, we’re guaranteed to have a good crowd.

One of our vendors, a CBH member and former owner of Comics & Robots, made my day as well as several others before we “officially” opened to the public. Quite often, it is not so much what you sell at a show that determines if you had a good day, but what you manage to buy at a good price for future sales. At roughly 7:30 in the morning, I had already turned over 5 Final Fantasy 12″ boxed figures, a Simpson’s dart board, 3 loose Super-Powers action figures, plus a Ronald Reagan and a G. W. Bush action figure (yeah, they exist!)- all of which I picked up recently at auction. Mr. Dawson was the first to show up, after me, and was in the mood to buy. I saw him carrying boxes of other goodies back to his table through-out the day. Craig knows a good deal when he sees it and took advantage of the situation – our vendors wanted to move some stuff. Take a lesson and try to make it to our next show.

Disappointingly, I did go back home with that brand new pair of size 19 Reebok cleats; but I did sell a box of 45′s, 100′s and 100′s of heavily discounted back issues and trades (I’ll be bringing a different inventory of them on the 4th), quite a few mini sets and runs (again, even more next time), some miscellaneous items from the house, and $5.00 worth of beanie babies (I gave away dozens, but I’m still putting that in the win column!)

Starting Monday, June 4th, we are accepting rentals on spots for our 4th of July event from CURRENT CBH MEMBERS ONLY! After June 20th, we will open it up to non-members. This has been our practice in the past and one we wish to continue as one of the many perks to being a CBH member. Cost is only $15 per spot. Special to those members who rented a spot at our Memorial Day Flea Market & Collectibles Show and also read our blogs – your space this time is only $10 if paid by the 20th!

Phillies fans recognized that I “stole” the idea for the title from Hunter Pence. Besides sharing their first names, my youngest son – Hunter – and Mr. Pence also happen to have been born on the exact same day and year! They also share the ability to hit a baseball, although with a little pride, I’ve never seen Mr. Pence hit one as far as the moon shot my Hunter launched last year in a semi-pro game. But, as my Mom used to say to me, “That, and a quarter, will get you a cup of coffee!” She said that many, many years ago. I got to hear Mr. Pence on the Preston and Steve show on WMMR Thursday. He was helping promote his charity and was a great sport; and, unlike many sports personalities, he can actually put more than two words together. Go Phillies!
