Thor Does Not Need The Avengers to Beat The X-Men
THOR-A-THON UPDATE/AVX ANALYSIS
AVENGERS VS X-MEN is coming! CBH is on the side of the Avengers. I was looking for a way to talk about how Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are going to trounce the X-Babies, and I could not get past my perception that Thor could do it alone. But I would have to back up my point, and since I have a multitudinous amount of unreadĀ THOR back issues, this would be a fun task. Thus THOR-A-THON was born. I’m trying to read as many issues of THOR as I can before April 3rd’s premiere of AVX.
I’m writing this on Tuesday, March 27. I started Monday, March 19. I have slowed my pace since the start and have read just 37 issues. Like I said, this is in my “free” time and I’m still trying to keep up with my other reading and TV.
Since I have issues from all different eras of the Thor comic, I’ve been skipping around to mix it up. The Stan Lee & Jack Kirby issues are so dense with text and imagery that they slow me way down, so I sprinkle them in here and there among other issues. I caught up on the last three issues of Matt Fraction and Pascual Ferry‘s current run on The Mighty Thor. I also finished the long run by Dan Jurgens and Scot Eaton, which was one of the best Thor stories of all time.
Spoilers ahead for old and recent issues of THOR!
Thor can whoop the X-Men – The Evidence
In THOR #142 the Thunder God holds his own against the original Super-Skrull who can use all the powers of the Fantastic Four simultaneously.
In THOR #149 a de-powered Son of Odin defeats the Wrecker who has a powerful enchantment given by Loki. Basically a “regular” Asgardian beating someone with Thor-like power. Thor wins by sheer force of will!
It seems that Thor’s power lies in his being Odin’s son and the God of Thunder and is augmented by the mighty mallet Mjolnir. Bestowed unto him by Odin, the hammer is an indicator of Thor’s heroic character. Even Thor can’t lift it if he is not “worthy”. In THOR #578 we see that it has the power of flight and can transport the holder through space, time, and other dimensions. And: “It is said that nothing can resist it.” How will even Colossus/Juggernaut stand up to it?
The Silver Surfer is one of the most powerful figures in the Marvel Universe imbued with the Power Cosmic, a portion of Galactus‘ life force. In Fraction’s current storyline, Thor has been “erased” and replaced in the timeline. Loki remembers him and goes to the Surfer to help bring Thor back. In THE MIGHTY THOR #11 (2012) Loki jogs the Surfer’s memory by telling him: “[Thor] bashed your head with his own so hard once that it actually dented your skull.” Forget Mjolnir, Thor could wreck Wolverine‘s adamantium skeleton with his head!
Thor can defeat the X-Men.
