The Glass Is Half Full!
DC Comics’ announcement that they are going to re-number 52 titles starting August 31st has some predicting the doom to comics. An e-newsletter that I subscribe to has some dealers seeing this as a “jumping OFF” point, not a “jumping ON” point that DC hopes will be the case.
Personally, I’m with DC on this and see it as a potential shot in the arm. Even though it is months away, news has leaked out and we have already gotten requests from some currently non-members (soon to join?) to be able to sign up for these! There are always those who react negatively whenever a comic company revises a character’s beginning, but movies and comic sales seem to back up the decision. I have steered clear of major cross-over events because I have not kept track of the huge cast of characters. Maybe now that fresh starts are being offered, I will start up again. This isn’t new – Marvel did it back in the early 90′s. Still, there are going to be those people who always see the glass as half empty.
FLEA MARKET! FLEA MARKET! FLEA MARKET! Monday, July 4th!
Time to either get organized and set-up a table with us this year or plan on stopping by and score some sweet deals. This year’s will definitely be bigger than last year, since we will not have the Farmers’ Market also occupying the parking lot. In fact, we are taking over their spots. Last year, we were restricted to the 10 spots along the wall by Mojo Main. This year, we will have 20 spots and might expand to 30 , if needed. More dealers – more bargains to be had! We would like to firm up as soon as possible. Space rental is $15 per spot. A “spot” is either one of ten marked and numbered spots along the sidewalk behind the two houses in front of the shop (these are 12′ X 12′ and you can use the sidewalk behind them) or one of the 9 parking spaces that immediately face them (these measure 10′ X 18′). In both cases, once everyone is in, and cars are gone, you can easily extend a few feet more into the parking lot area. To accomodate the Newark Co-Op and the potential customers, we ask that vendors not park in this front lot – there will be parking behind the store, across the street, and along the “Fusion” side. This will be advertised as a Flea Market & Collectibles Show in the store, on fliers, signs on Main Street, on this web-site, on Craigslist, Facebook, and hopefully, some of the local newspapers. It is our 4th year. First Come- First Served, so reserve your spot NOW!! In the case of inclement weather, there will be no rain-date. Think “Half Full”. Paul is taking care of most of the details, if you have any questions.
As an aside – regarding an earlier blog I wrote regarding people taking advantage of others at yard sales/flea markets, I had some comments that it is the seller’s responsibility to know their product, and I certainly agree. It was just that in the two cases I was referring to, these were elderly people. Perhaps my advancing age has made me very sensitive to this issue. I know of a dealer who paid an older couple $15 for a box of golden age comics, because “that’s what he offers for any box, regardless of the contents.” Bull Hockey! This was told to me by one of his employees who was embarrassed by his actions. Fortunately, he is no longer in business. Now, that there is a FULL glass!
Those set up on the 4th are all smart, shrewd people who just want to move some stuff and pick-up a few bucks. No need for guilt here – take advantage of them!
I plan on having my glass at least half full a few times this Thursday night, as I will be at the Logan House to catch CUBANE in round 1 of this year’s MusiKArmegeddon (sp?). CUBANE just performed as the headliners at The Note, a great original music venue in West Chester. A big kudo has to go out to Rick who belted out the songs, even though he had 3 ribs cracked in a car accident just 10 days prior. They also, gave out copies of their new EP featuring 4 songs. I bet there will be some available at the Logan House! Plus, you just have to check out their award winning bass player. They just started a new website www.cubane.co (no “m”) for more info and to hear some of their new recordings.
A thought in keeping with the theme: Always borrow money from a pessimist – he won’t expect it back!
