Was Y2K late? Or did the “Rapture” come early?
Well, it’s 6:30 PM on Saturday the 21st, just watched the Preakness(glad I didn’t put $$ on Flashpoint!), and I’m still here! And, if you’re reading this, I guess you weren’t one of the chosen either!
If there was going to be a catastrophe, I got a good preview of what would really turn this world upside down this morning. Computers going bonkers! We’re helpless if they don’t work! After getting up at 5:30 AM, so I could have time to drive to an auction up by Allentown, PA and have time to preview the lots before it started, I had time to get me a little breakfast at the Burger King near by. They couldn’t take my order because “the system was down.” I’m not saying that they couldn’t cook the food – they couldn’t put the order in the register! Ok, no biggie, I just went to the Dunkin Donut up the street. THEN… half way through the auction, their system goes down. This really caused a stir because they had phone bidders and live bidders on the internet. Several staffers worked frantically and with dire looks trying to figure out how to get everything back. The auctioneer tried to stay calm and even sang into the mike (as one called out in the audience – “don’t quit your dayjob!”). After a half hour, we were back – for about 10 minutes. They got it up and running quicker this time, but sitting near the podium, I heard one staffer state that whatever they did might not hold. I left shortly after that.
Waiting to hear what the Camping Camp has to say.
