$150,000 for Hulk 181, a buck for Hulk 102!

Yep, supposedly, someone recently paid 150 grand for a 9.9 graded copy of Hulk 181, the first full appearance of Wolverine! The finest known copy, I guess. We had a decent copy of it in the showcase for a mere $675 and several people said they were going to buy it. Well, you’re all too late! BUT… I am offering you a chance to own the world’s worst copy of Hulk 102. O-kay, maybe there is a worst copy out there, but until I see it, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. And here’s the best part – some lucky cuss – could be you! – is going to get it for a mere buck. That’s right, a book that guides for $450 in NM, for just 4 quarters – IF you try the GACHA machine and your number matches! Be sure to check out the other possible comics you might win. While you’re at it, the other 3 GACHA machine bins are filled with other prizes.

How’s this for a prize? You buy a storage bin, sight unseen, and find a copy of ACTION COMICS #1!! I just happened; and according to the news media, this is the same copy that was owned by Nicholas Cage and stolen over 10 years ago. Yes, the same Nicholas Cage who just got arrested in the Big Easy. Now, who gets it? -the guy who purchased the unit, or does it revert to the insurance company. Or, can Cage “buy” it back from the insurance company, as I’m sure the settlement he received back then is considerably less than its current value. Supposedly, it is one of the best copies. Stay tuned. I believe it will be the topic of an upcoming episode on “Storage Wars”.

I purchased two lots at auction the past week, also “sight unseen”. At the first one, I had walked around the room prior to the start of bidding and did not see a box that contained Big Little Books. I’m seated in a chair when they announce a box with some in it. Normally, people bid me up on these at most auctions, and I was about to drop out, especially since I had not looked at them and these get beat and fall apart pretty easily. Then everyone else stopped and I won the lot . It was in a fairly deep box, and ended up getting 7 BLB’s, all in surprisingly nice shape! Included in the box were some brushes, two polished stone “eggs”, and 5 crucifixes!! It was a win! Saturday, I drove to an auction up above Reading that listed quite a few lots of comics. Listed was a World’s Finest #48 (the last of the square bound issues), a Defenders #1, Amazing Spider-Man 13 & 15, a lot of 356 Thor comics including around 20 JIM issues, some other golden age comics, treasury editions, groups of Conan, and on and on. I decided that I wasn’t even going to bother to check out some of the lots since the lists didn’t look that interesting and once I saw how over graded the “estimates” were, why bother? An estimated “VG” copy of Jungle #97, that appeared to have a piece off the top edge of the cover when viewing the picture online, actually was mouse eaten through most of the pages! The ASM 13 had 3 binder holes. Now, I know better, but I had spent an hour and a half driving up to this place and had that facing me going home and it was already raining – I had to get something. So, I bid on a lot of Hulks that I never did check, but the list said a 102 was in the bunch. Like X-Men 94, Hulk 102 can be viewed as a #1. You guessed it. It’s now in the GACHA machine offerings. This was not a win!

A minor observation – When you go around to different auctions, you will see that some auctioneers try to differentiate themselves from the rest – put their own flair to their call. One that I see almost weekly uses the expression “somebody could” while trying to get the bids up there. I figured that it was his ‘trademark’ expression. Then I heard another auctioneer use it on Thursday. Different states.

A couple things before I sign off: A BIG Thank You again to all of the very generous CBH people for the donations to Rich Gallaher and his family. I saw several of our members at the beef and beer. Rich was very appreciative.

Free Comic Book Day is less that 3 weeks off -mark your calendars! Even though it shouldn’t be necessary to mention it, FCBD is not the best day to ask to revise your pull list. Thanks.

Finally, remember how hard it rained this past Saturday? Wouldn’t it have been nice to have that rain barrel then? The big, blue barrels are back! 25 bucks each. See paul
