Paul’s Picks
I screwed up, and should have mentioned this a month ago, but it isn’t too late. Sign up for the new launch of Dark Horse Presents! It should arrive next month at the shop.
Why? Simple…CONCRETE by Paul Chadwick, that’s why! In my opinion, the best, the very best, comic ever put out there! As I have explained to many over the years, once you get past the improbable situation of someone being captured by aliens and having his body transformed into this form, with its extraordinary abilities and limitations, it is a great story. You follow “Concrete” , whose memory, beliefs, and emotions have been left in tack, as he experiences challenges, both common and unusual. Chadwick tackles many social issues and gets you involved as you think about your own beliefs. The comics are a little difficult to find, BUT, we do have graphic novel compilations in stock.
O-kay, you need more – I get it. How about a new Neal Adams series, Blood? How about a new Howard Chaykin series? Carla Speed McNeil’s Finder finds a new home! All of this, 80 pages worth, for only $7.99. That’s basically, only 2 bucks a comic! Still, not convinced? (I’m sounding like one of those commercials now) Throw in an interview with Frank Miller and a preview of his Xerxes series! Done! Oops, no, evidently Richard Corbin has signed on to do some work in this anthology!
More Picks…
American Idol - still a big Steven Tyler fan. Even at my age, I still love Aerosmith, and their front man has helped keep me tuned into the show with Simon’s departure. I just saw part of the first elimination show where they whittled the number down considerably from 24 – caught me by surprise. Kita and I are into it and will be putting together a fun “you be the judge” poll/contest very soon!
CUBANE – As evidenced above, I’m an old rocker (what’s that? I should be IN an old rocker?), and my favorite local original rock band, CUBANE, has been on hiatus for close to a year due to one member departing due to a career obligation and another tied up with the clean-up of the gulf; but the boys are whole again, and they have written lots of new tunes and a new recording session is in the works. One of their loyal fans is having a birthday party and has asked them if they would come out and perform at JB McGinnes on the 18th of March. It looks like a go – more on this later!
BEEF and BEER! It’s just a month away, Saturday, April 2nd, at the Talleyville Fire Hall. This benefits our good friend Rich Gallaher and his family. Rich managed and then bought the Talleyville branch of Captain Blue Hen Comics in the 90′s. His battle with cancer has been very costly and its our chance to help with their expenses. Tickets are available at the shop. For those unable to attend and/or would like to make donations – either for their general fund or as prizes for the event, kindly drop them off at CBH! Thank you very, very much!
The GACHA machine is up and running!
Wait, did I just spy a picture of Charlie Sheen on the site as one of our friends?!
