Teachers Place Comics in Reading Curriculums
“Students used to secretly read comic books at their school desks under the cover of a carefully placed textbook. Comics were contraband, and teachers took them away faster than you could say, “Holy Batman.”
But comic books and their offshoot cousin, the graphic novel, featuring longer stories and a book spine rather than staples, are steadily gaining respect in schools as a way to teach — and reach — even the most reluctant readers. More school libraries are stocking illustrated narratives these days, and the form also is popping up in classrooms.”
