This is Scott Pilgrim Series Review! 1-2-3-4!

Review by CBH Member, RANDAL

You have read the books. You have seen the trailers. Now after six long years, Bryan Lee O’Malley will finally see his epic series of epicness, Scott Pilgrim, come to an end.  For those of you living under a rock, Scott Pilgrim is what defines “indie” comics these days. Released in individual “Manga sized” volumes, Pilgrim is filled with everything any self-described nerd could possibly want. Scott Pilgrim delivers comedy as well as true emotion that we can all relate to.

The series follows 23-year-old Scott Pilgrim, bass player for the band Sex Bob-omb, part time hero, full-time slacker, as he falls in love with his dream girl, the American ninja delivery person, Ramona Flowers. There is just one problem; she has some serious baggage in the form of The Seven Evil Exes. In order to continue to date her, Scott must defeat all seven exes, while dealing with the normal tedious problems of growing up. Though the plot sounds simple, this series is very character driven and you’ll find yourself deeply invested in them. The series feels like a classic video game [With manga-inspired “ninja” battles – Butting-In ed.]. During his many battles, Scott strings together multiple hit combos, gains experience points, and even grabs a 1-UP. The sixth and final volume: Scott Pilgrim’s Finest Hour, pits Scott against the “Big Boss”, Gideon.  Will he be able to defeat him and win the girl of his dreams?

Brian Lee O’Malley deserves all of the praise and awards he has received for Scott Pilgrim and then some. The art, which some call “too simple”, is great. The characters actually talk like normal people instead of sounding like they belong in a Kevin Smith or Diablo Cody movie. I regret not reading this series sooner as I think with the upcoming film, Scott Pilgrim will become one of the greatest indie-cult titles of all time.

For all of you gamers out there, Ubisoft will release a Scott Pilgrim vs. The World videogame in August. The game will be available for download first for the Playstation 3 and then later for the XBox 360. Borrowing from the classic 8 and 16-Bit arcade classics, this will be a side scrolling, beat ‘em up. Scott, Ramona and Stephen Stills will be available as playable characters.
