Superman #701 Review

An ‘In Case You Missed It’ Review

As someone who has not been following any of the Superman titles in recent years, and not having any real interest in the character, I found Superman #701 to be one of the best titles I have read in a long time. J. Michael Straczynski (Thor, Rising Stars) takes the helm this time around and, despite mostly negative buzz around the new creative direction, delivers what could be considered DC’s most promising title on its roster.

701 is the first issue of a new arc: “Grounded” features Supes out for a stroll like us puny earth folk. Sounds really silly and boring, right? I thought the same thing before sitting down to read it, but I can assure you that this is the fresh coat of paint that this character has been dying for.

This book removes what I believe to be the glaring flaw of Superman… he is a SUPERman, nothing (other than the various types of Kryptonite) can hurt him. He doesn’t have to worry about rent or the family car breaking down…etc. JMS takes this god-like figure and literally grounds him, putting him face to face with individual people and their everyday problems in
hopes to reconnect with the human aspect that has escaped him in recent years.

Superman #701 is the perfect jumping point for anyone looking for something new and refreshing in the DC Universe. Finally, a new creative team really delivers the goods. For the first time ever, a Superman title will be added to my pull list. Add it to yours, you won’t be disappointed!

CBH NOTE: We are trying to get more and there will be a second printing. #702 continues the storyline.
