Credit card scam, new silver age comics, & CUBANE

I thought I would share something with our loyal website readers and hopefully save you from a scam. My wife works in the criminal division of the Attorney General’s office and sees, hears and receives notices and warnings about criminal activity out there. Here’s one: Be sure to check your receipt, especially at large stores with long lines. Cashiers have been caught at a MAJOR discount chain adding a “cash back” amount to customers’ total. They play on the long lines and holiday rush that we all go through. Later in the shift, they remove the $20 or $50 they charged you!! Cash backs should show up in an itemized receipt, but many people do not check until after they have left the store, if at all. Be careful out there!

I just purchased another small collection of silver age comics. Fortunately, the owner had already visited a competitor and when he heard my offer, he accepted immediately. He revealed later that the owner of the other shop offered only 1/3 of what I did. Anyway, they are in the bins directly behind the check-out counter. Come and get’em! Once again, our website readers get first dibs!

CUBANE did an hour and 45 minute long set at the East End Cafe last Saturday. Rather than taking a break and doing 2 short sets after openers, STILL MOON SERVANTS, they just kept on going. You have to treat yourself someday and catch them live. You missed a great set, but they are playing next Tuesday night (12/8) at Doc Watsons in Philly for Jaxon and WMMR night. go to cubaneband.com for more info.

Thanks for the info on the scam. Clever.

Sorry, story is false. A version of this story hit the web about two years ago and it has been fine-tuned over the months. if you go to http://www.snopes.com/fraud/atm/cashback.asp, you will discover that this is essentially impossible to effect without the store’s explicit co-operation, since no teller has the ability to key in such a transaction.

While the warning to be aware of your purchases is valid (I’ve seen more than once where a cashier might double-scan an item and not void the erroneous one) the cash-back scam simply can’t be done without the victim’s knowledge and acceptance.
