3. Draggin the Lion (dance)
This year’s party ain’t just about comics and Captain Blue Hen Comics- we’ve invited our neighbors to the
soiree. Aside from the Newark Arts Alliance and Newark Natural Foods participating, the New Heart Ministry will be offering concessions. But what’s a party without a little dancing? So our neighbors at the Shao Lin Tiger & Crane Kung Fu Academy will be kicking off the festivities with a Lion Dance around 12 or 12:30
The Lion Dance has a long history associated with Kung Fu, with the lion movements associated with their kung fu style. Traditionally the goal of the lion in the dance is to “eat the green” or choi chang. The lion normally makes several passes at the greens – once to see if its worth obtaining – second to survey the safety of eating – and third to actually eat it. The lion will eventually find and “eat” the green which brings good luck and fortune to all that participated. The more difficult it is for the lion to obtain the greens – the more luck is bestowed on all concerned.
We know the lion is already going to save you some green because you’ll already be getting a comic for Free! Come enjoy the show!
