8. Franco! Franco! Franco!

10 Cool Things about Free Comic Book Day 2009 at Captain Blue Hen Comics

#8. What is Franco? A new cologne? A pretentious clothing designer? An elitist and trendy L.A. restaurant? Cher impersonator extraordinaire?

But to Captain Blue Hen Comics, Franco is a long time friend and  half the creative talent behind DC Comics’ Tiny Titans and Patrick the Wolf Boy.  Many, many moons ago, Franco made his Newark debut at an early A.C.M.E. show and was a regular fixture every year, even contributing art for the show featuring Franco’s Weirdsville characters Tommy and Monty.  Ultimately Franco and partner -in-comic crime Art Baltazar hosted the Big Amoeba independent comic awards at our A.C.M.E. show.  The true life story behind the Big Amoeba is chronicled in the eponymously  named Big Amoeba that co-stars Franco and features yours truly, Joe a.k.a. Captain Blue Hen, in a lesser, but nonetheless critical, role. (I live for giving autographs, and counting my Mom, yours will be the second).

Franco is an absolute blast and will be sketching and signing copies of this year’s DC FCBD 2009  Kids Mega Sampler spotlighting the Tiny Titans, which everyone should be reading. It’s great for little kids (my 3 year old won’t go to bed until I read her the latest Titans pet Club Meeting story) and honestly has some of the most insightful and loving satire of the DC Universe out there.  You haven’t laughed until you’ve seen Darkseid in a hair net (I recommend using Clint Eastwood as a guide when your doing his voice for a toddler).

Franco has promised to bring some of his art for sale which is always a big hit at conventions. Franco’s drawing workshop is scheduled for 1:45 to 2:15 next door at the Newark Arts Alliance.

Aw Yeah Franco!  We’ll see you Saturday.
