This Week’s Must-Read Comics (4/22-4/28)
Big movie stars, Batman and Wolverine, have a bunch of stuff coming out this week (more than you see below). Other than that this week features some “where is the next issue of…” titles like Warren Ellis’ Astonishing X-Men, Neil Gaiman’s “Whatever happened to the Caped Crusader?”, Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass, Billy Tucci’s Sgt. Rock, and JMS’s Thor #601. Finally!

This week I’m going with Azrael, Arkham, Detective and Hulk. I’m not sure why I’m still buying Hulk as it jumped in price for no reason though.
Gaiman’s Detective was interesting–more like a close reading of the Batman mythos than an actual story.
Loeb’s Hulk seems like some sort of experiment in over-the-top superhero storytelling. He may have been shooting for a tongue-in-cheek Lee/Kirby pastiche, but I think he ended up with an homage to early Image Comics. Here’s hoping we get a better writer after the Red Hulk storyline wraps. (I think ‘Rulk’–ugh–is T-Bolt Ross, but I don’t much care at this point.)
The Bendis Avengers books and crossovers are all the rage (except with you, Osiris, I know), but meanwhile Dan Slott may have the most interesting Avengers book with Mighty. Slott, one of my all-time favorite Spidey scribes, is busy tying up loose ends from House of M, Civil War, and Secret Invasion, while adding significantly to the ongoing Dark Reign. If he could only get a decent artist…
I’m still looking forward to reading Amazing, Invincible, Ex Machina, Daredevil, and more this week.
