Dave’s Stack – New Comics Shipping Feb 11

Welcome to the (better late than never) fourth enticing episode of Dave’s Stack!

This is a weekly feature that serves as a get-to-know-me exercise. Plus, I get to see what you read, so isn’t it fair that you get to see what I’m going to purchase this week?

Check out what I’m picking up this week (remember you can click on the covers to get a description!). Have a look at everything that’s coming in on Wednesday on our New Comics page. What am I foolishly missing? What am I buying that you wouldn’t touch with a 10ft. pole? What’s in your stack? Anyone? Anyone? Buehler? Jim Denaxas?

You missed a few things, the Harley Quinn Trade, Glamourpuss #5, Fire and Brimstone #4, Darkness #75 and X-Infernus #3. Feel free to get rid of the Star Wars and Marvel Illustrated to make room.

Wait, let me bask in the glow for a second…feedback…opinions…that’s the stuff.

    Now:
I never liked the Harley Quinn episodes of the Batman cartoon (blasphemy!) and probably could not get that voice outta my head when I read the book. But I hear her comics can be quite fun.

I’m afraid I don’t know from Fire & Brimstone–why should I pick that one up? I like new stuff.

I run hot and cold on X-Men books. I’m not following any of the regular books right now. But everyone should check out the awesome X-Men: First Class! (and Millar & McNiven’s Wolverine is great on the rare occasion it comes out).

Darkness interests me and I liked Ron Marz’s writing on the CrossGen books (Remember those? That’s where some of today’s stars got their start like McNiven, Cheung, and DiVito among others). I should probabaly pick up that trade that came out this week. It’s just $4.99!

Glamourpuss. I can appreciate, but I don’t know if I actually enjoy it as a comic book. Make no mistake, Sim’s art is fantastic, and I love the artists that he has been paying homage to. It just kind of looks and reads like his art journal. I don’t know. Did you see that he did a zombie variant for #5?

Don’t knock the Marvel Illustrated books, my friend! Whether I’ve read the source material (in the case of The Odyssey, I’ve read several translations/interpretations of Homer) or I haven’t (I had not read The Picture of Dorian Gray before the comics adaptation), I have really enjoyed these books. Roy Thomas is doing the adaptations and his long background in comics (this is the guy who took over for Stan Lee when he stepped aside as writer and editor of the big Marvel books) is serving him well. Comic adaptations can be clunky or childish in the wrong hands. Thomas knows his source materials and is using them well, quoting whenever he can. It’s actually amazing how skillfully he has been able to break down these classics into individual comics.

Star Wars Clone Wars is something I get for my son, but I’m liking it too. He just turned 7 and it’s one that we read together. The art is great and each comic is an individual adventure and also part of a larger story.

Thanks. Tom. Great conversatin’ with ya’.

Anybody else care to share? Look, it’s easy! OK, I’ll give you another chance next week, too.

Wow, those are more involved reasons than I expected. Fire & Brimstone is the new book from Richard Moore. He was doing his own series, Boneyard for a while, but now it’s on slight hiatus. I assume it’s to get F&B done. It’s basically a mini about an angel and devil who let a bunch of demons run loose on earth, so to get back into their respective eternities, they have to go round them all up. From what I hear, Moore does his fair share of adult books, but this one has been clean so far. Definitely fun, though I think this new issue is 4 out of 5 so it might just be worthwhile to check the eventual trade.

I have nothing against Marvel Illustrated, I just has no interest in any of the source material. And since I’m a comic reader and afraid of new things, I haven’t tried it yet. Though Roy Thomas is intriguing.

You win with the Star Wars thing…nevermind. Oh, and those zombie variants for the Glamourpuss are quite possibly the dumbest things I’ve ever seen. I do not endorse those at all.

  4. Dave says:

I just got a little excited that someone wanted to get a conversation going! It was like a dry riverbed in a downpour.

I always meant to pick up Boneyard. Moore’s F&B sounds interesting too

Some of the source material for the Marvel Illustrated line is the root of our most dominant genre, superheroes. If you like a proper tall tale of good and evil, quests and monsters, and larger than life figures, look no further than The Iliad and The Odyssey, my friend.

Zombies are the new ninjas, which I believe were the new monkeys.
