Guardians of the Galaxy #2GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #2

The writing team of Abnett and Lanning are on fire and the art team of Pelletier and Magyar aren’t cooling things down any. This title is fun and inventive. It is a spin-off from Annihilation: Conquest and Starlord, but you need not have read those books to enjoy this one.

GotG is all-out superhero space adventure with its roots in Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon. It reminds me of the best of the Micronauts (the killer Marvel toy tie-in from the late ’70s and early ’80s). Don’t know that one? What about Star Wars (the one you kids call Episode IV - A New Hope)? Like team books? Enjoy the current Nova? Are you a Bill Mantlo fan? Do you get a kick out of the cosmic corner of the Marvel Universe? If you answered ‘yes’ to any or all of these questions, you will love GotG.

This is not the team from Marvel’s 31st century (but as you will see in #2 that group is not forgotten). This set of Guardians saved the Kree section of the universe from the threat of Ultron. They stick together out of a new sense of kinship from the Annihilation wars and to defend the galaxy against the aftereffects of those catastrophes. Star-Lord leads his proactive team of Adam Warlock, the new Quasar, Gamora, Drax the Destroyer, Mantis, and Rocket Raccoon (but where’s Bug?) to fight the dark things that are making their way into our dimension.

The threats and some of the team are cosmic, but the relationships and fights are down-to-earth. In other words, this isn’t a doom and gloom dark epic, but instead we get relatable characters and laser-blasting battles where the quips fly.

Give Guardians of the Galaxy a try and put a little “Wahoo!” into your comics diet.
