RUMORS —

According to Scifi.com, Marvel has offered the lead role of Luke Cage to Tyrese Gibson. “They’re still tweaking the script, and all I will say on that is if that slot eventually opens up, I’ll probably be that guy to come in there and bring that man to life and have a little fun,” Gibson said.

There are also rumors going around on boards and in different interviews with people connected to Spider-man. That they plan to film Spider-man 4 and 5 back to back.

Manga Lots are up on eBay with a LOW starting bid!

As this is being typed, Paul has put up over 800 manga graphic novels on eBay, with more to come soon. These are being offered in lots of about 30-34 each - enough to fill a “Diamond” box. Each lot is starting at only $39 each, which includes shipping. But, for you local Captain Blue hen customers, he will deduct $5.00 per box of each winning bid if you pick them up here!! Check the listings. Basically, you’re only paying for about 4 volumes if you get a lot for the minimum - the rest are FREE! Go to eBay and under the advanced search, type in “cbhcomics” under seller or if you put in “manga comics group” under the regular search, they should show up. Most are going off the end of next week. The VIZ volumes will be up shortly. Good Luck!

Cap in Iron Man and Hulk? Fraggle Rock to the Big Screen?

Bwahah, they finally gave me the reins and I am ready to charge. I will split up my post into two different sections, NEWS and RUMORS. With all my RUMORS I will post links to pictures so that it doesn’t ruin anything for anyone.

NEWS —

The Weinstein Co. will turn the Jim Henson series “Fraggle Rock” into a live-action musical feature. Cory Edwards, the director of “Hoodwinked”, will be writing and directing “Fraggle Rock”.

The Comic-Con Magazine has released on its cover the first picture of Samuel L. Jackson as the Spirit’s arch-villian, the Octopus.

RUMORS —

With Iron Man holding strong at the Box Office we have every fan boy dissecting the movie. Here is a link http://www.firstshowing.net/2008/05/09/cap…nd-in-iron-man/ that has a picture that fan boys all over the net are thinking caught a glimpse of Cap’s shield on the table. Judge for yourslef.

With the Incredible Hulk coming June 13th, there are rumors of Cap being mentioned in this movie as well. There are rumors floating around that General Ross is in discussions with some scientist and he mentions a Super Soldier experiment taking place during World War II.

Some thoughts and websites for Librarians, Literature / Language Arts & Math Teachers, as well as concerned Parents and others.

First of all, the opinions expressed here are Paul’s and do not necessarily reflect those of Captain Blue Hen Comics & Entertainment or its staff:

This may seem as heresy to my colleagues, but as a retired public school math teacher, I believe that the most important subject taught in school is not math, but reading. With all the emphasis in the math curriculum on applying the math, how is one to teach them how to do the math when they do not know what is being asked? (Math is definitely #2, however.)

Reading should be taught as being fun.* Comics can help in this area. Start that habit when kids are young. Does your son or daughter really need to spend hours in front of the newest game system? Joe, Dave, Kita, and some of our gracious local artists and writers have been visiting schools and libraries to try and introduce comics and graphic novels to young readers. Our comic distributor, Diamond Comics, has a website

    http:bookshelf.diamondcomics.com

that was created to help expand this medium. Check out its recommendations. Teachers can even get instructional packets utilizing comics in the classroom. If we are currently out of any trade mentioned on the site, Joe will be happy to order it for you.
* Do we really need a semester of Shakespeare every year through-out high school? (just a personal rant, but I know that the being forced to read the Bard turned off many a student)

A big peeve of mine is the pushing of calculators on elementary students before they have learned basic facts. As a high school math teacher, I experienced the wave of students who were given calculators instead of learning their multiplication tables - students who never learned how to perform long division. Try teaching algebra to students who can’t even do long division. Too many do not have any “number sense.” All they do is copy and accept whatever the machine says - not aware that they may have mistyped and their answer is ten times too large or too small. I’m all for calulators once you can demonstrate that you can do it without the “crutch.” Warning: more and more universities are not allowing freshmen to use graphics calculators. Do you think they are seeing the same thing? Anyway, I could rant on forever on this subject and invite your comments and observations. A couple of interesting youtube videos on teaching math in schools are:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tr1gee-bTZI

and a follow-up response at

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOH9gwImyXg

Enjoy and let us know what you think.

What do Manga, Pull-Sheets, Credit Cards, & Parades have in common?

Not much actually, except they are all going to be mentioned below!

    Parade

Next Sunday, May 18th, Newark has its annual Memorial Day Parade scheduled - weather permitting. Main Street, including directly in front of the shop, will be closed to all traffic from roughly 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM. We will be open, but if you are in the parking lot when they close down the street, you will not be able to leave until the end! Plan accordingly.

    Manga

Paul needs the room in his garage and has decided to put up groups from that huge manga collection on eBay. If you just need one or two, grab them NOW at $5.00. The lots will start to appear on eBay shortly. Paul’s seller ID is CBHCOMICS.

    Credit/Debit Cards

You may have noticed that we have a sign near the register requesting that you try to refrain from using your cards for purchases under $10.00. Many are not aware that we are charged a fee whenever you use either a credit or debit card. With more and more people using their cards for small purchases, that really cuts into the bottom line. For “small” shops such as ours, when you use it as a credit card, we pay a swipe fee PLUS a percentage, and that percentage is based on our average sized ticket. When the average falls, our percentage goes UP - on ALL transactions until they analyze the account again. Debit cards have a one time larger swipe fee. Big chains like Starbucks aren’t affected the same as us since they have a different deal.

    Pull Sheets

Members - If you have not filled out a new pull sheet since last September, we did one for you. Your old pull sheet will be in your bin on your next visit. We ask that you check the new version we created. Don’t forget to check the phone number we have, in case you have changed yours. Every month, Dave updates the sheets to reflect the latest offerings in the current Previews. As a result, new titles are added and finished series are deleted. This also causes titles to be shifted on the pull sheets. To help us cut down on errors pulling your comics, kindly redo your sheet every two months or so. Rule of thumb: if you need to write the title in, you probably need a new sheet or the title is a “special order item” only. Thanks
