CAPTAIN ACTION #0 - In this tribute to the multi-outfitted action figure, C.A. is a super-spy.

CAPTAIN AMERICA #37 - Could this be the best superhero/spy comic ever? Is it consistently excellent every month? Yes and yes.

CAPTAIN MARVEL #5 SECRET INVASION - Brian Reed writes compelling superhero comics with an eye towards continuity and character development. His Ms. Marvel title is fantastic too.

ARTIST JIM MOONEY DIES AT AGE 89

blank3.pngTaken from DC COMICS DIRECT CHANNEL #877 - April 1, 2008:

Jim Mooney, the prolific artist who worked on memorable DC Comics features including Batman, Supergirl and Tommy Tomorrow, has died at age 89.

“Jim Mooney’s beautiful women and noble men graced the DC universe for decades, showing up (sadly uncredited for much of the time) from the adventures of Batman and Robin, to the far future of Tommy Tomorrow, to his legendary run on Supergirl,” said Paul Levitz, DC Comics President & Publisher. “Few artists have made our characters look better.”

Born in 1919, Mooney broke into comics in 1940 with early publishers Fox and Fiction House. He soon moved to Timely Comics, where he specialized in funny animal features, then joined DC Comics in the late 1940s as penciller on BATMAN and DETECTIVE COMICS, as well as solo Robin tales in STAR SPANGLED COMICS. In the 1950s, he contributed numerous stories to DC’s mystery titles and illustrated Tommy Tomorrow in ACTION COMICS and, later, WORLD’S FINEST COMICS.

In 1959, Mooney became the regular artist on Supergirl, one of his signature features, in ACTION COMICS, beginning with the second installment of the series. He continued to illustrate Supergirl through the 1960s, while working on HOUSE OF MYSTERY’s Dial H for Hero and several Legion of Super-Heroes tales for ADVENTURE COMICS.

Mooney moved to Marvel Comics in the late 1960s, where he went on to draw Spider-Man, Man-Thing, Omega The Unknown, Marvel Team-Up, Thundercats and numerous other series. Most recently, Mooney contributed to Claypool Comics’ Elvira and Soulsearchers and Company.

Movie News Round-Up: Hellboy II, Punisher, The Spirit, Transformers

Item!
hb2.jpg
A new Hellboy II: The Golden Army trailer at has more footage, a spot for a viral website at the end of the trailer, and oh yeah a glimpse of Big Baby!

Item!
Some more Punisher News. Sadly but being best for the movie, Punisher: Warzone will be pushed back to December 5th from September 12th. If it were to stay on the Sept. 12 release date, it would go against the all-star cast of Al Pacino and Robert Deniro in Righteous Kill, another revenge/vigilante movie.

Item!
Pictures of Scarlett Johansson as Silk N. Floss in Will Eisner’s The Spirit by Frank Miller have been released.

I came to you guys about three weeks ago with the rumor that Michael Bay and company (Autobots) in tow may be filming the Transformers sequel in Philly. Here is a quote from KYW1060.com about their recent interview with Sharon Pinkenson, executive producer of the Greater Philadelphia Film Office.

“Philadelphia’s KYW Newsradio 1060 has posted an interview with Sharon Pinkenson, executive director of the Greater Philadelphia Film Office, that seems to confirm Transformers 2 shooting will take place in the city. Here’s a clip:

“Dream of the Romans” has been shooting. ‘Tenure”, “Happy Tears”, and “Marly and Me” are upcoming as is Transformers II. But won’t giant robots wreck the place????

“Ha, ha. Let’s just say the destruction part is going to be digitally enhanced.”

Otherwise, there goes the neighborhood.”

So here’s to filming soon and maybe a few Captain Blue Hen’ers can be extras.

Batman: The Brave and the Bold Cartoon

blank3.pngBatman is back in animation in a Cartoon Network series in 2009. Batman: The Brave and the Bold will team the Caped Crusader with other DC Comics superheroes.

Mike Manley, one of eight guest comics artists for our Free Comic Book Day, is a character designer on the series. Mike says the upcoming show is for the kids:

“One of the things I enjoy about this new Batman cartoon is the fact we are going back to a kinder, friendlier Batman.”

The show will air Friday nights on the Cartoon Network in the same hour as the new Star Wars: Clone Wars.

Story compiled from icv2.com and Manley’s Draw! blog.

Martin’s Cards Still Wild, Titans New Again, Moore Bounces Back with Echo - Dave’s Picks of the Week (4/9-4/15)

grrmwc1.jpgecho_issue02.jpg1titans.jpg
GEORGE RR MARTIN’S WILD CARDS #1 HARD CALL - All new stories featuring Martin’s “Aces” and “Jokers”.

TERRY MOORE’S ECHO #2 - The first issue of this series was engaging and exciting. This is another great comic from the creator of Strangers In Paradise.

TITANS #1 - In the 1980s DC had a huge hit on its hands with The New Teen Titans by Wolfman and Perez. That story was about the coming of age of a group of super sidekicks–Dick Grayson, Roy Harper, Donna Troy, Wally West, etc. Judd Winick and Ian Churchill bring that group together again to continue their story as an extended family of grown heroes. Highly anticipated!

X-Men: First Class Review

blank3.pngX-Men: First Class HC Vol.1: Tomorrow’s Brightest

Writer: Jeff Parker
Pencilers: Roger Cruz w/ Paul Smith
Inkers: Victor Olazaba & Roger Cruz w/ Paul Smith
Colorist: Val Staples
Letterer: Nate Piekos
Cover: Marko Djurdjevic

The X-Men have been going through some rough times recently. With Endangered Species, Messiah Complex, and now Divided We Stand the group of merry mutants doesn’t have much to be merry about. Thankfully, there’s X-Men: First Class.

X-Men: First Class is a book based during the beginning of the X-Men as a team. Marvel Girl, Cyclops, Iceman, Angel, and the Beast make up the team along with the ever present Prof. Xavier. These stories are essentially untold tales from the beginning of the X-Men’s history. Each issue is a done in one full of fun adventure. Jeff Parker is obviously having a blast with this book. Each page is full of great dialogue with fun interactions all around. Nice touches like the characters needing to stop themselves from using their real names in the field are great. And each issue is one great adventure that fits fine in the old X-Men but don’t muck with continuity. So no need to worry about decompression on this one, each issue is jam packed and throw nine of them together in a collection and it’s hard to go wrong.

On the art side of things, Roger Cruz does some cool things with slightly new costume designs and all the characters they meet. Everyone from Dr. Strange to The Lizard makes an appearance somewhere in the book and they’re all a blast to see. The style itself is a bit on the cartoony side, but it works for the lightheartedness of the stories. And the Marko Djudjevic covers don’t hurt one bit.

This is a book for people that like the X-Men, but want to go back to a simpler time when they were just a bunch of teens trying to figure things out. This specific hardcover collection contains all of Volume 1 Issues #1-9. A paperback is also out, but I have to say the hardback is pretty beautiful on my shelf. Anyone who likes fun stories will dig this book.

Check it out if you like: The Marvel Adventures Line, Agents of Atlas, any previous old school X-Men book, the original X-Men
