Strike Shutting Down Shows—Entertainment-Starved People Turn to Comics in Droves
Well, not yet, but why not?
The Hollywood writers’ strike has begun having an impact on TV. Fox, for example, announced that it would not premiere 24 as planned. Family Guy is shutting down with creator Seth McFarlane refusing to complete any episodes beyond the one that airs on Sunday.
Meanwhile, TV writers with comic connections were showing up on the picket lines, with Joss Whedon and Damon Lindelof picketing in front of Walt Disney Studios.
But guess what Joss Whedon and others are writing? Comics! Comics based on TV shows, movies, and popular games like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Star Trek, and World of Warcraft. Comics based on books like Dark Tower and Anita Blake. Smart superhero comics like Dynamo 5 and Ex Machina. Great all ages comics like Bone and Marvel Adventures Avengers. Popular manga like Bleach and Naruto. Just like movies and TV, there is something for everyone in comics. If you want to try something new, just ask your friendly CBH staffer or read recommendations on this website (Look in New Comics, Reviews, and Previews.)

The biggest thing in comics right now is the media tie-in. Buffy is selling as well as X-Men. Movie and TV writers are writing superhero comics. Movies and TV shows are getting comic titles: Buffy, Angel, Supernatural, Veronica Mars (potentially), Army of Darkness, Simpsons, Friday the 13th, Star Trek, and more.
Where’s your new fix of 24, Heroes, and Battlestar Galactica? At Captain Blue Hen! Your kids love Star Wars, but already have every special edition DVD and piece of merchandise? Well, do they have the incredible new comics based on the movies, cartoons, and video games?

I have to disagree, I think creators will soon lend their hands into the development of pogs. I think pogs are slated for a major comeback thanks to the boost of Hollywood writers moving into this new realm. The post-Civil War Marvel and the 52 Universes of DC are all new to milkcaps so there is material a’plenty. I look forward to pogs during the lull of the writer strike.

I couldn’t agree with you more, Jim. I can see the headlines now, “Look- It’s Larry David, Dick Wolf, David E. Kelly, Stephen J. Cannell, Jim Brooks and Glen A. Larson! They’re back! And in POG form!” Collect them all including the rare foil variants of the Ooga Chucka Dancing Baby from Ally McBeal and The Cop Rock Holographic lenticular die-cut Slammer. Let’s not forget the Galactica 1980 POG with LED and sound chip. You’ll have to build a new wing on your house if you’re a fan of Law & Order and plan to collect the full set. Pineapple Orange Guava juice sales will hit an all-time sales record here on the continental US (both bottles will finally sell)!

I am very much looking forward to seeing what manatees are capable of when the Family Guy pogs hit.
