Paul’s Puzzle Page answer!

For those who wondered if they had won a “No Prize” (remember those from Marvel?), here’s the answer to the SEND MORE MONEY puzzle: 9567 + 1085 = 10652 is the correct combination of substitutions. If you recall a hint I gave (see a previous blog), the first number one probably would deduce is actually the last one you would write if actually doing the problem. The “M” in MONEY had to be a “1″ - when adding a column of two numbers, that’s the only possible carryover. That makes the “M” in MORE also a “1″. That means the “S” in SEND has to be either a “9″ or an “8″ (requires a carry over from the previous column) in order to get a two digit number in the column. Should you try the “8″, it leads to a contradiction, so it must be a “9″. Since the rules insist that different lettters are replaced with different numbers, there can not be a carry over from the “100’s” column - that would make the “O” also a “1″. Therefore, the “O” is a zero!and so on…
Okay, now, how are you doing on the alphabet puzzle (again, see a previous blog). You do not have to get all of them to win! Just enter! Yours might be the best! In the event of a tie, a winner will be drawn at random! Good Luck!
