The Immortal Iron Fist Volume 1: â€¨The Last Iron Fist Storyâ€¨

It all began with Brian Michael Bendis’ Daredevil. After months and months of putting Matt Murdock through the wringer, Matt was no longer the one running around in the Daredevil suit. As the Marvel heroes’ Civil War came to a head, it was time to choose sides, and the man who was covering for Matt, decided to come into his own once again. That man was Danny Rand, The Iron Fist.

In the six issues collected here, it’s safe to say that Iron Fist goes from a relative unknown all the way up to awesome. We open with the Iron Fist hero side of things along with the Danny Rand, head of the Rand Corporation, business side of things. Old friends show up and new friends are introduced, as well as a new nemesis. It’s hard to go much farther into things without becoming spoilerific. This is an expertly written series crafted by a relatively new, but soon to be huge, writer Matt Fraction and veteran writer Ed Brubaker. They bring both some edge and some light-heartedness to the characters in these pages.

But without the art, this is just a prose book. I would be hard pressed to point to a better combination of writing and art short of the writer drawing the story himself. David Aja’s art style fits perfectly along with the flourish he adds, such as a discolored circle where Iron Fists’…well, fist, colides with a man’s skull. There is no wasted space in any panel as each inch is used to it’s full potential.

All in all, this is a fun and action packed story, with some more too it than what’s presented on the surface for those who can take the time to look. Volume 1 collects The Immortal Iron Fist #1-6 and is available in Premiere Hardcover Edition as well as a Trade Paperback Edition (due out soon).
