Update on the Silver Surfer Quarters
As expected, the initial excitement (and high prices realized) on eBay has eased some. Checking recent “sold items”, it looks like you can pick one up for less than $50 now. The 6/12/07 issue of the “Numismatic News” has an article about the furor, and possible fines, over it. Assuming that they have researched it a little more carefully than the small article I saw in the local paper, it seems it was the Franklin Mint that altered 40,000 2005 California quarters and the alteration is described as “essentially, a sticker was placed on the reverse.” They were distributed throughout the country on Memorial Day weekend and entitled a holder to enter contests on “riseofthesilversurfer.com”, but it appears that the website does not require having one to participate. Anyway, even though it’s just a sticker, I’m still looking for one and am willing to trade $100 of your choice of any 3/4″ diameter circular GREEN-tagged items in the shop to the first person who comes in with one. New Green-tagged stock is being added on 6/14 - check the boxes on and under the table near the booths.
