LocalLOCAL
ONI PRESS
Writer: Brian Wood
Artist: Ryan Kelly

What makes Local so good?

  • The characters are true-to-life.
  • Each issue is a self-contained story that is completely different.
  • The settings are interesting.
  • Personalized DVD-like commentary that really adds to the stories.

For Local writer Brian Wood (DMZ, Demo) does what he does
best: tell engaging stories about people. Wood’s characters
could be your friends and neighbors. Every issue follows one
character as she wanders America without a true home. Sometimes the story is about her, but other times she is simply bearing witness or wandering through someone else’s story.

The title is Local for a reason: the locales are as much a part of the book as the characters. Each issue takes place in a different place, small town or a neighborhood in a city. This is where the artist, Kelly, really has to step up. Stores, restaurants, and streets have to look like they do in real life. If an issue took place in Newark, you would recognize the Deer Park, Main Street, and Captain Blue Hen. The places flavor each issue because that particular story could not happen in another locale.

Commentary is included as text pieces in the back. Wood and Kelly write a message about their work or their personal connection with the characters or location in that issue’s story. They also provide lists of songs that they think would be great soundtracks to the issue.
